Volunteer Opportunity – Museum Tour Guide

Do you enjoy meeting people, sharing stories and bringing history to life?

The Aycliffe & District Bus Preservation Society and Aycliffe Bus Museum are seeking enthusiastic Volunteer Tour Guides to welcome visitors and lead engaging tours of our museum and historic vehicle collection.

As a Tour Guide, you will play a key role in helping visitors discover the rich history of public transport, engineering and the local community. Through your knowledge, enthusiasm and storytelling, you will help create memorable experiences for schools, community groups, heritage organisations and individual visitors.

No previous guiding experience is required – full support and training will be provided. What matters most is a passion for history, people and helping visitors enjoy their experience.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Welcome organised groups and visitors to the museum.

  • Lead guided tours of the museum, vehicle collection and restoration areas.

  • Share the stories behind our historic vehicles, artefacts and archives.

  • Answer visitor questions and provide information about the Society and its activities.

  • Support educational visits and special events.

  • Help ensure visitors have a safe, enjoyable and informative experience.

  • Assist in promoting the museum's mission and encouraging future support and involvement.

What We're Looking For:

  • Friendly and confident communication skills.

  • An enthusiasm for history, heritage, transport or engineering.

  • The ability to engage with visitors of all ages and backgrounds.

  • Reliability and a welcoming attitude.

  • A willingness to learn about the museum's collection and history.

  • Previous experience in customer service, tourism, education or public speaking is welcomed but not essential.

What You'll Gain:

  • The opportunity to share and preserve local transport heritage.

  • Experience in public speaking, visitor engagement and heritage interpretation.

  • The chance to meet a wide variety of people and community groups.

  • Ongoing training and support from experienced volunteers.

  • Membership of a friendly and passionate team dedicated to preserving history.

Tour Guides are often the public face of the museum, helping visitors connect with our collection and understand the important role transport has played in shaping our communities. Your enthusiasm and knowledge can help turn a visit into an unforgettable experience.

Whether you can assist with occasional group visits or become a regular member of our visitor experience team, your contribution will help us educate, engage and inspire future generations.
