Volunteer Opportunity – Schools Liaison Officer

Are you passionate about education, community engagement and inspiring young people?

The Aycliffe & District Bus Preservation Society and Aycliffe Bus Museum are seeking a Volunteer Schools Liaison Officer to help build strong relationships with local schools and educational organisations.

This exciting role will involve visiting schools, delivering engaging workshops and presentations, and promoting the educational opportunities available through the museum. You will help introduce young people to the fascinating worlds of transport history, engineering, local heritage and preservation, encouraging future generations to learn, explore and become involved.

As an ambassador for the Society, you will play a vital role in expanding our educational reach and ensuring that our heritage remains relevant and accessible to young people across the region.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain relationships with local schools, colleges and educational organisations.

  • Deliver engaging presentations, workshops and educational activities within schools.

  • Promote museum visits, educational programmes and outreach opportunities.

  • Work with teachers to develop curriculum-linked learning experiences.

  • Represent the Society at education events, careers fairs and community activities.

  • Assist in the development of educational resources, activity packs and classroom materials.

  • Encourage young people to explore subjects including engineering, transport, local history, heritage conservation and volunteering.

What We're Looking For:

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.

  • Confidence speaking to children, young people and education professionals.

  • An interest in education, history, engineering, transport or heritage.

  • Enthusiasm, creativity and a passion for inspiring others.

  • Experience in teaching, youth work, training, public speaking or community engagement is desirable but not essential.

  • The ability to act as a positive ambassador for the Society and Museum.

What You'll Gain:

  • The opportunity to inspire and educate future generations.

  • Experience in educational outreach and community engagement.

  • The chance to help shape and develop the museum's growing education programme.

  • Opportunities to build relationships with schools and community organisations.

  • Membership of a friendly and dedicated volunteer team committed to preserving and sharing transport heritage.

Education is central to our mission. By taking the museum beyond our walls and directly into local schools, you will help ensure that young people can discover the stories, skills and innovations that have shaped our transport heritage and local communities.

Whether you are a current or retired teacher, youth worker, community volunteer or simply someone who enjoys working with young people, your contribution could help inspire the engineers, historians and volunteers of tomorrow.

To express your interest or find out more, please contact the Aycliffe & District Bus Preservation Society.
