Volunteer Opportunity – Engineering Volunteer

Do you have engineering, mechanical or vehicle maintenance experience and would like to help preserve an important part of our transport heritage?

The Aycliffe & District Bus Preservation Society and Aycliffe Bus Museum are seeking enthusiastic Engineering Volunteers to support our existing engineering team in the maintenance, restoration and preservation of our collection of historic vehicles.

This is an exciting opportunity to work on a diverse range of heritage vehicles, helping to ensure they remain operational, safe and available for future generations to enjoy. Whether you are a retired engineer, skilled mechanic, apprentice, technician or simply have practical engineering experience, we would love to hear from you.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist with the maintenance, repair and restoration of historic buses and other heritage vehicles.

  • Support routine inspections, servicing and mechanical repairs.

  • Help diagnose and resolve engineering faults.

  • Assist with vehicle preparation for museum events, rallies and public displays.

  • Contribute to workshop projects and restoration programmes.

  • Support the preservation of engineering knowledge and skills through mentoring and teamwork.

What We're Looking For:

  • Experience in engineering, vehicle maintenance, mechanics, fabrication, electrical systems or a related trade.

  • Practical problem-solving skills and a willingness to learn.

  • A commitment to safe working practices.

  • The ability to work as part of a team.

  • An interest in historic vehicles, engineering or heritage preservation.
