DAF SB220 - Optare Delta - G251 SRG
Representing a new generation of British bus design, G251 SRG is a beautifully preserved 1989 DAF SB220 with Optare Delta bodywork that combines innovative engineering, passenger comfort and an important place in the public transport history of North East England.
G251 SRG is a 1989 DAF SB220 fitted with the distinctive Optare Delta bodywork, built by Optare at their Cross Gates factory in Leeds. Introduced during a period of significant change within the British bus industry, the Delta represented a new generation of modern, lightweight single-deck buses, combining stylish design, passenger comfort and engineering innovation.
Delivered new in November 1989, G251 SRG entered service with Northumbria Motor Services as fleet number 251. It was the first of four Optare Deltas purchased by the company and marked a milestone in the operator's history as its first fleet of full-size single-deck buses. Built to a high specification, the vehicles featured comfortable high-backed seating, air suspension and Hanover electronic destination displays, offering passengers a smooth and modern travelling experience that was ahead of its time.
During the 1990s, the North East bus industry underwent considerable change. Following the acquisition of Northumbria Motor Services by Cowie plc, the company became part of the newly formed Arriva group. G251 SRG was renumbered 4090 and proudly became the first single-decker in the region to wear Arriva's distinctive aquamarine and cream livery, making it a familiar sight on roads across Northumberland, County Durham and Teesside.
Throughout its working life, G251 SRG served communities from depots including Jesmond, Alnwick, Morpeth, Durham and Darlington. For over sixteen years, it provided reliable service on a wide variety of local routes, carrying thousands of passengers safely to work, school, shopping trips and family outings. After an impressive career, the bus was withdrawn from passenger service in January 2006.
Thankfully, its story did not end there.
Recognising the vehicle's historical importance, G251 SRG was purchased for preservation by two former Directors and major shareholders of Northumbria Motor Services, one of whom later became Non-Executive Chairman of Optare. The bus subsequently underwent an extensive restoration by Gardiners of Spennymoor, returning it to its original Northumbria Motor Services appearance.
Following completion of the restoration in 2008, G251 SRG made its debut in preservation at the renowned Showbus rally at Duxford, where it attracted considerable interest from enthusiasts and former passengers alike. Since then, it has attended numerous heritage events, rallies and running days, continuing to represent an important chapter in the story of public transport in the North East.
Today, G251 SRG is proudly on long-term loan to Aycliffe & District Bus Preservation Society, where it forms an important part of our operational heritage fleet. It stands as a reminder of an exciting period in bus development, when modern engineering, passenger comfort and innovative design transformed public transport across Britain.
For many visitors, G251 SRG evokes memories of daily journeys, family outings and commuting across the North East. For younger generations, it offers a fascinating glimpse into how bus travel evolved during the late twentieth century. Whether operating on one of our heritage running days or displayed at the museum, this beautifully preserved Optare Delta continues to educate, inspire and keep the region's transport heritage alive for future generations.
We are delighted to care for G251 SRG and ensure that this remarkable piece of North East transport history continues to be enjoyed by enthusiasts, former passengers and visitors for many years to come.
