Submit your stories…
This page is where you can submit your stories to our Memory Vault section. The memories you share may also be used in and around our museum, helping us bring the region’s history to life for visitors now and in the future.
The Memory Vault is a place where the past is carefully opened, explored, and shared through the voices of those who shaped everyday life across the North East. Here you will find stories, articles, and personal recollections that capture the character, resilience, and spirit of a region built on hard work, shared experiences, and strong community ties. From bustling shipyards and coal seams deep underground to quiet villages, coastal communities, and the transport networks that kept people connected, these memories reflect a way of life that defined generations.
In the Memory Vault, history is more than dates and events. It is the lived experience of people who built, worked, travelled, and served within their communities. In partnership with the Aycliffe and District Bus Preservation Society, there is a special focus on the region’s transport heritage. This includes not only the vehicles themselves, but the people behind them. Former bus company employees, long-standing Society members, and others whose lives were shaped by the industry share personal accounts of depot life, days on the open road, workplace camaraderie, and the challenges of keeping essential services running.
Through personal stories, forgotten traditions, and significant milestones, the Memory Vault explores how industry, innovation, and community shaped both the landscape and the values of the North East. These accounts offer an authentic window into a world that has changed dramatically over time, revealing moments of pride, humour, hardship, and determination.
By revisiting these stories, we gain a deeper understanding of how the past continues to echo through the present. The lessons, struggles, and achievements of earlier generations remind us of the strength found in community and the importance of preserving our shared heritage. Looking back also helps us look forward, using history to inspire future generations to learn, create, and build upon the foundations laid by those who came before.
If you have a memory or experience you would like to share, we would be delighted to hear from you. By submitting your story through this page, you can help ensure these voices are preserved and continue to be heard for generations to come.
